People by nature want to be entertained. Anyone following entertainment news may know that film as a medium has become very popular and influential. The masses love to watch movies for their regular dose of entertainment. In many small towns of India the only source of entertainment is cinema. There are long queues in front of cinema hall ticket counters for a popular film. Some actors, like Rajnikanth, create a kind of mania in film goers by creating a certain type of hype about their films.

The Hindi film industry in India is popularly known as Bollywood after the American film industry hub Hollywood. India has the distinction of producing the maximum number of films in a year. However, most of the Indian films are not successful commercially.

The Indian film industry has a star system. Some actors who become very popular among the general public charge a lot for working in a film. They become stars and become highly influential. Many film stars in India charge the biggest chunk of the budget of the film. I fact many general people are so star struck that they go to cinema halls just by looking at the face of the film star. They fail to understand that the quality of the films depends on script and direction more than the actor. This star system has put lots of problem in the growth of the film industry in India. Top stars of Indian film industry include Rajnikanth, Aamir khan, Shahrukh khan, Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachachan. In the past years the tops actors included Dileep Kumar, Raj Kapur, Dev Anand, and Guru Datt.

Aamir Khan has come up some blockbuster films of late. His film Ghajini released in December 2008 broke all records of the Indian box office. The film was exceptionally well marketed. The story of the film was about revenge story of a person suffering from short-term memory, he suffered after an accident. Last year in 2009, Aamir’s film 3 Idiots broke records set by Ghajini. 3 Idiots is a film about the Indian educational system that promotes rote learning.

As the film industry has grown fast in last some years, many foreign film production companies have also come to the country to do business. Sony and Warner Brothers are examples of foreign film companies producing films in India. However, as they have not much understanding of the Indian audience they tend to put their money in the wrong films products.

The film industry has taken a big leap in last some years. Now big corporate houses have entered the industry. They have started their operation in film production, film processing, and post-production work. UTV and Ntworkd18 are two listed companies that have performed well in the film industry. Even a leading corporate house Reliance has entered the film industry. You can keep updated about these by following entertainment news regularly.
