Government Stipulations for Dental Research

The private sector became the target of one university research department and they needed to develop a plan that will allow them to convince some of these companies to invest in their cause. Labeling the conference as academic entrepreneurship helped a biotechnical center in one state. The center is one of seven in the state created by state law for the advancement of technology. An application needs to be filed should one center wish to be accredited by the state.

About a million from the state funds go to research and development but any center that qualifies for a grant needs to find another source from the private sector to give them the same amount of money. Some of the subjects presented in a conference teaming up with a venture capital organization include dentistry, surgery, and drugs. From venture organizations to pharmaceutical and biotechnical companies the conference successfully caught the attention of about 50 corporations. It was important for the university to explain the kind of dental research they are conducting on school grounds including the overall goal they wish to achieve for the program.

He was skeptical of the conference idea at first, but found that all the participants took the exchange of ideas more seriously than he had expected. As for the dental products they were able to mass market these items to both dental and non dental companies who joined the event. A conference will now be held on a yearly basis because of this. To capitalize on a conference like this one some investments need to be made afterwards. Not only did they generate huge publicity but they even attained different research contracts.

Examples he gave of research that led to the development of products included the periotron, an instrument used to measure crevicular fluid for use in diagnosis and evaluation of treatment for gingivitis and periodontal disease. Almost always new tools resulted from dental research and other examples include plaque control mechanisms like pH electrodes and ultraviolet cameras and o-miniaturized oxygen for periodontal pockets. Diagnostic testing machines were designed to make use of saliva as a systemic indicator. Traces of alcohol can easily be provided by a person's saliva. When it comes to glucose there is always the crevicular fluid for analysis.

When a number of people begin experiencing a series of lingering conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure the prolonged exposure can cause difficulties with treatment. Any ailment requiring treatment almost always ends up with certain medications having adverse effects on other functions of the body like saliva flow for one. About 14% of persons older than 55 have dry mouth. Other than dry mouth syndrome a person may also encounter problems with dentures, caries, and malodor.

A dentist is knowledgeable about the hard and soft tissue but to care for the latter there is much development required to produce diagnostic tools. Cavities are common problems that can affect a routine dental check up. No cavities meant that a check up was good but now if there are problems with the patient's gingiva and periodontia even with zero cavities dentists take action.

A give and take form of relationship is enjoyed by a dentist and the patient. The industry has learned that some things take a very long time, given the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Commission requirements and the academic world.

There are times when people resort to combative behaviors for money. The government is also facing hard times especially with their generation of government funds as the money no longer increases as fast as before and so the officials could not simply provide the funds needed by researchers. Problems like the aging of equipment not to mention problems with inflation can worsen the situation. There is not enough money to go around for research purposes especially with the increase in applicants. This is not an isolated event as a number of new dental graduates faced the problem of having fewer patients for all of them to treat as cavity cases decreased.
