To generate funding for their university research program looking for corporate investors became the goal of the department heads for which they needed a strategy. Private corporations took part in the academic entrepreneurship program of a state biotechnics center. This is a group that state law has created for the purpose of technological advancement. A center only becomes official after going through the entire application process.
The state provides up to $1 million a year with the stipulation that each center is expected to find matching funds from the private sector. Some of the subjects presented in a conference teaming up with a venture capital organization include dentistry, surgery, and drugs. Venture organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnical corporations comprised the 50 or so participating companies during the conference. Each type of research is meant to achieve certain results and the university explained the extent of their research programs to the participating companies.
It was not simple to arrange everything for the conference and having to worry about unresponsive participants did not help as well but things turned out great. There were some companies who did not directly belong to the dental field and yet still showed interest in the dental products. The conference, which was termed a roaring success, will be repeated in the coming years. To capitalize on a conference like this one some investments need to be made afterwards. The research contracts were great rewards for all their effort during the conference.
An example of the benefits from successful dental research is the development of the periotron for gingivitis and periodontal problems where the tool can serve to diagnose and cure diseases. They made it possible for different tools to emerge and some more of these developments include pH electrodes for measuring plaque, miniaturized oxygen for measuring oxygen in periodontal pockets, and ultraviolet cameras for analyzing plaque. Successful results came from attempts to use saliva for diagnostic tests. The breath only attracts a minute amount of alcohol compared to saliva. Today most people have fewer options for treatment as they bear the burden of diabetes and high blood pressure for longer periods of time. When physicians prescribe medication for certain conditions these also reach other areas of the body and most drugs have the tendency of affecting saliva flow. Any person experiencing midlife is susceptible to conditions like dry mouth. Caries, denture problems, and malodor are some of the possible consequences of a dry mouth.
In dentistry both the hard and soft tissues are significant but more diagnostic tools are needed so that it could be possible to provide ample treatment for the soft tissue. When there are cavities then the check up will not turn out to be good. No cavities meant that a check up was good but now if there are problems with the patient's gingiva and periodontia even with zero cavities dentists take action.
There are a lot of things that could be gained from both parties involved. It is inevitable that the academic world and the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Commission will challenge the field of dentistry as they proceed towards further development.
Money is one of the things that can lead to serious rivalries. A few years back the government can easily generate enough government money to provide the funding for research projects and the like but this is no longer the case today. The situation can also be burdened by problems with inflation as well as having equipment that are aging. Researchers who are demanding a share of the government funds have grown in numbers. In dentistry there was a time when dental graduates were exceeding in numbers while the rate of the onset of cavities significantly dropped.
