In order to get private companies involved in the research program of one university they needed to find a way for both sides to meet. From a seminar called academic entrepreneurship another state's biotechnical center gained their funding. The center is one of seven in the state created by state law for the advancement of technology. State law requires any center that wants such designation to file an application.
Any amount of money that comes from the million dollar state research fund should be matched by a member of the private sector working with the particular centers. Dentistry, surgery, and drugs were among the topics presented to potential investors during the conference, which was cosponsored with a venture capital organization. About 50 corporations were represented, ranging from venture groups to major pharmaceutical companies to small biotechnical companies. Each type of research is meant to achieve certain results and the university explained the extent of their research programs to the participating companies.
In complete opposition of what they expected from the participants the visitors actually treated the conference seriously. As for the dental products they were able to mass market these items to both dental and non dental companies who joined the event. There will be another conference to be held in the following year. Without any interest or investment opportunities successful events lose their value. Thanks to the idea they now carry numerous research contracts under their belt.
One of the fruits that came from much dental research includes a tool labeled as the periotron that makes use of crevicular fluid levels to determine cases of gingivitis and other periodontal diseases. Almost always new tools resulted from dental research and other examples include plaque control mechanisms like pH electrodes and ultraviolet cameras and o-miniaturized oxygen for periodontal pockets. We've also developed diagnostic tests where saliva is used as a systemic indicator. Alcohol fumes in a person's breath can easily fade shortly after consumption. When it comes to glucose there is always the crevicular fluid for analysis.
Because a number of patients are continuing to live with diabetes and high blood pressure longer they complicate the treatment provided to them. Physicians who try to treat a problem in one part of the body can result to prescribing medicines that result to problems with the patient's saliva flow. The occurrence of a dry mouth can happen to 14% of people over 55 years old. Resulting from a dry mouth the condition worsens when caries, malodor, and denture problems are experienced.
Dentistry is not just hard tissue, caring for soft tissue coincides with the development of diagnostic tools. Basic dental checks are done to ensure the absence of cavities. No cavities meant that a check up was good but now if there are problems with the patient's gingiva and periodontia even with zero cavities dentists take action.
A give and take form of relationship is enjoyed by a dentist and the patient. The dental industry is not in the dark when it comes to how influential government bureaus and the academic world can be and they know that it will indeed take much time before they fully improve.
Money is one of the things that can lead to serious rivalries. It is possible to obtain research funding from the government but take into consideration that the government has limited power over the money especially because it no longer increases as fast as it used to. The lack of funds is bad enough but people still have to worry about inflation and aging equipment. From a select few one cannot even begin counting how many people are now contending for this money. Dental graduates in exceedingly high numbers expected much work after the school year but their expectations ended up in smoke when the number of cavities drastically went down.
