Buying your first acoustic starter guitar is a huge decision and it's one that is easy to get wrong.I've made bad decisions when shopping for guitars and I would like to help if you are thinking of a starter acoustic guitar for the 1st time.

My Father got me my first acoustic starter guitar when I was a young man. It was a giant body, no name acoustic guitar with an electrical pickup that he'd purchased from a guy he worked with. I don't know why he thought it could be a good idea as I'd not asked for one and hadn't shown any interest in any form of instrument previously. He had no way of knowing the massive and life long changes it'd make for me when he purchased it. I am 50 now and looking back on a love affair with guitars that has lasted all my adult life.

I didn't have a clue how to tune or play it at first. All I knew was that I REALLY liked it. Strumming some random strings and having fun with the way in which it sounded was an introduction to a world of music. I played for a few hours every evening to begin with or till my fingers bled whichever came soonest. I had chosen the world's worst guitar tutor - me! If only I had known a bit of what I know now when I started with my acoustic guitar.

For a start I would not have got the music guide I did. It was old fashioned and filled with outdated songs that did nothing for me emotionally. Tip no 1 - concentrate on what you enjoy. Learn to play the type of songs that you take pleasure in. In case you have a favorite band play their music. It should make the experience a pleasure instead of a chore. There is a enormous amount of excellent music available to buy or downloaded from the web without cost that you will never have an opportunity to play more than a tiny fraction of it.

As soon as I had some of the basics below my belt I fancied trying a different guitar and set off to my local second hand store with a hard earned £25 in my excited little hands. I bought the largest, reddest guitar that they had simply because it looked so damn sexy! The action on the guitar (the space between the strings and the fretboard) was huge. It made it very difficult to play and everything was much harder because of it. Tip no 2 - get a guitar that sounds as good as it looks. Shopping for a guitar is very like shopping for a automobile in that we purchase it emotionally. We fall in love with the way it looks before we ever drive it. If you do not know enough about guitars to decide on one which 'feels' right in addition to sounding good take somebody with you who does. If you do not know anybody like that do some homework before you buy. There are many guitar magazines and review web site on-line that should provide you with a good idea about the varied producers and models available.

Some Guitarists will inform you that you can play any song with only three chords and there is some truth in that. Learning a number of simple chords to get you started may be very important. Remember that horrible music book I bought? It held me back for years. Tip no three - get some tuition. If you already know somebody with a guitar get them to spend a little time with you. Study some fundamental chords and strumming. This may move you ahead much better and faster than making an attempt to learn on your own. I would suggest guitar classes except you must find the correct teacher. A bad teacher can put you off music for life. A good teacher will have the ability to recognise the place you need help and how best to practise.

Tip no 4 - and perhaps the most important is buy the best guitar you can afford. Learning to play is difficult enough with out having to wrestle with an inexpensive no-name guitar as well. Too many individuals decide to purchase an inexpensive guitar not knowing if they will keep it up and afraid that they will waste the money. A good quality guitar will get you off to the correct start. It will be a lot easier to play, sound much better and stay in tune longer. Bear a few of these tips in mind when buying a starter acoustic guitar and you'll stand a much better chance of learning the instrument and it will give you a lifetime of delight in return.
