Riccar upright vacuums fall into three categories, eight pound lightweights, single motor upright, and the Tandem Air models. This review is on the single motor upright models.

Riccar upright vacuums are now made in America, with many outsourced parts. But almost every "Made in USA" product is made with some parts shipped in from abroad. Riccar vacuums get consistent high rankings from Consumer magazines and exceptional ratings from review websites like www.about.com and www.epinions.com .

Here are a few of the features that may apply to your situation;

1) The models feature a free floating adjustable nozzle. The upright will adjust to virtually any height or thickness of carpet automatically. The bad news is that you don't want to use the upright on bare floors, even tile or hardwood floors. Some Riccar models include a switch to did connect the belt from the roller, enabling you to vacuum bare floors without the brush revolving.

2) The motors are all metal. Most motors on upright vacuums today are encased in plastic. Plastic is an insulator of heat ad seals heat inside the motor. Metal is a conductor of heat and allows the heat to dissipate away from the motor. Metal motors last longer, and cost more.

3) The dirt goes into the bag before the air goes through the motor. Some uprights allow the dirt to pass through the fan chamber of the motor before the dirt enters the bag. The dirt goes in the bags first, in the Riccar. This keeps the motor clean and free of debris.

4) The brush roller has very stiff brushes that are natural fiber. Pet hair is picked up much better than with most vacuums. And hair doesn't stick to the roller brush, except very long human hair.

5) The motor in the Riccar uprights is actually a canister style motor. These motors have far more suction than normal upright motors. The slight disadvantage is that the roller brush turns slightly slower than in some uprights. This means that the attachments have far more suction but less brushing speed. Overall, a very good choice for most people.

Here is who should not get the Riccar upright; People with all bare floors. The Riccar upright is primarily designed to use on carpeted surfaces.

Riccar does not make a bagless vacuum cleaner. If you are absolutely set on the idea of a bagless vacuum, Riccar is not for you.

You should always buy a Riccar from an authorized dealer in your area. Riccar dealers are not allowed to ship outside of their assigned areas. And buying from an unauthorized dealer will void your warranty.

I hope this helps.
