One thing they will appreciate is if it appears like you took a little time in deciding on the vacuum cleaner for them. Purchasing a vacuum cleaner with features that match their situation will help. Do they have carpeted steps? Then a longer hose would make cleaning easier. Do they put up with allergies? Then a HEPA filter would demonstrate that you were thinking of them.
The recipient may even be able to tell if you bought the lowest priced model. If they find the exact same model on sale at Wal-Mart for $49, they will not be impressed. They are going to tell you how much they value it, but that definitely is not what they are thinking.
