Originally all vacuum cleaners were bagless. all vacuum cleaners simply used a cloth bag to contain the particles and dirt. The vacuums leaked particles and odors, however they were to a large extent better than possessing nothing at all. Afterward bags were released to dramatically cut down on the dust. The paper bags were a huge development because they cut down on the odors kept in the cloth outer bag, and the debris and dust could be thrown away without a dust cloud forming above the lightweight upright vacuum cleaner.
Around 1985 the bagless lightweight upright vacuum cleaner became popular. At first, bagless vacuum cleaners had a definite real advantage over with a bag vacuum cleaners. The HEPA filter that all bagless vacuum cleaners utilize stops almost all the dust and odors from leaking out the lightweight upright vacuum cleaner exhaust. The good news was that the HEPA filters stopped dust from spewing out. The bad news is that the clogged up rapidly. They blocked sooner if the air contained high humidity or if you were sucking up pet fur. The pet dander sticks to the filter and retards air flow. The slowing air flow is also the stuff that cooled the motor. The motors in bagless vacuum cleaners tend not to last as long as with a bag vacuum cleaners on account of this constrained airflow to the motor in bagless vacuum cleaners.
The two main reasons shoppers ask us about bagless vacuum cleaners is: 1) They want to save money on paper bags, or 2) They want less dust. Without a bag vacuum cleaners need a HEPA filter to contain the dirt and pet hair. These filters are very effectual. They also need to be changed not less than once a year (more often if you have young children or pets) and, they aren't inexpensive, $29 - $59 each. It is impossible to spend as much for paper bags. High filtration paper bags can cost you a dollar or two apiece. You will throw away less money on the paper bags than for the bagless filters, even if you change the paper bags repeatedly.
A lesser amount of dust? Do you use garbage cans at home? Do you use garbage can liners? Why? Because it's far more sanitary when you throw out the bag instead of dumping the can with all the dust being thrown into the air. Generally high end vacuum cleaners now employ micron filtration bags along with a HEPA filter at the exhaust of the lightweight upright vacuum cleaner. The micron filtration bags offer excellent filtration, and they don't clog up and restrict airflow like the HEPA filters in bagless vacuum cleaners. The HEPA filter at the exhaust takes much longer to get dirty because the filth is trapped in the high filtration paper bag.
Less expensive vacuum cleaners are all bagless. The profit is in the filters, not the disposable vacuum cleaners. The higher end vacuum cleaners almost all use high filtration inner paper bags.
If you have pets, the family pet dander is what sticks to the bagless HEPA filters. We also urge to pet owners that they use a lightweight upright vacuum cleaner with a charcoal filter to trap and neutralize the pet odors. Also, natural fiber brushes on your lightweight upright vacuum cleaner's roller brush will not trap the pet hair in the brush roll.
