With so many different choices of computer study programs on offer these days, take the time to seek out a company who can guide you on one that will suit you. Reputable companies will familiarise you with the types of jobs that you might enjoy, before suggesting a training path that can take you where you want to go. If you're thinking about becoming more IT literate, perhaps with a Microsoft Office Package, or even loftier ambitions, you have a choice of how to study.

The latest training methods at last enable students to learn on an innovative style of course, that costs far less than traditional courses. The economies of scale of these quality courses allows everybody access to them.

Please understand this most important point: You absolutely must have proper 24x7 instructor support. Later, you'll kick yourself if you don't follow this rule rigidly. You'll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and phone support is usually just a call-centre that will take the information and email an instructor - who'll call back sometime over the next 1-3 days, when it's convenient to them. This is all next to useless if you're sitting there confused over an issue and only have a specific time you can study.

The best trainers use multiple support centres around the globe in several time-zones. Online access provides the interactive interface to link them all seamlessly, no matter what time you login, help is at hand, with no hassle or contact issues. If you fail to get yourself direct-access 24x7 support, you'll quickly find yourself regretting it. You might not want to use the service in the middle of the night, but you're bound to use weekends, late evenings or early mornings.

Getting into your first IT role is often made easier if you're supported with a Job Placement Assistance facility. With the great skills shortage in Britain at the moment, it's not necessary to make too much of this option though. It isn't so complicated as you might think to find the right work once you're well trained and qualified.

One important thing though, avoid waiting until you've passed your final exams before updating your CV. As soon as your training commences, enter details of your study programme and get it out there! Getting onto the 'maybe' pile of CV's is better than being rejected. Many junior positions are given to people who are still at an early stage in their studies. If you'd like to get employment in your home town, then it's quite likely that a specialist independent regional recruitment consultant or service could work much better for you than the trainer's recruitment division, due to the fact that they're far more likely to have insider knowledge of the jobs that are going locally.

A slight grievance for some training course providers is how much people are prepared to work to become certified, but how ill-prepared they are to market themselves for the job they have trained for. Don't falter at the last fence.

A lot of men and women presume that the tech college or university system is still the best way into IT. So why then are qualifications from the commercial sector slowly and steadily replacing it? As demand increases for knowledge about more and more complex technology, the IT sector has had to move to specialist courses only available through the vendors themselves - namely companies such as Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe. This often comes in at a fraction of the cost and time. Typically, only that which is required is learned. It's slightly more broad than that, but the most important function is always to master the precisely demanded skill-sets (including a degree of required background) - without trying to cram in every other area (as degree courses are known to do).

When an employer understands what work they need doing, then all they have to do is advertise for the exact skill-set required to meet that need. The syllabuses all have to conform to the same requirements and don't change between schools (in the way that degree courses can).

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, utilising reference manuals and books, is an up-hill struggle for the majority of us. If all this is ringing some familiar bells, find training programs which feature interactive and multimedia modules. Many years of research has constantly demonstrated that connecting physically with our study, is far more likely to produce long-lasting memories.

Search for a course where you're provided with an array of DVD-ROM's - you'll begin by watching videos of instructors demonstrating the skills, and be able to use virtual lab's to practice your new skills. Make sure to obtain a study material demo' from your training provider. You should ask for expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and interactive labs where you get to practice.

Pick physical media such as CD or DVD ROM's every time. Thus avoiding all the issues associated with broadband outages, failure and signal quality issues etc.
