Good for you! As you're reading this article you've doubtless been pondering on retraining for a new career - so you've already done more than most. Only one in ten of us are pleased to go to work each day, but most just moan and do nothing about it. So, why not be one of the few who decide to make the change.
We suggest that you discuss your ideas first - talk to a knowledgeable person; an advisor who can discover your ideal job, and offer only the training programs that will suit you:
* Are you happier left to your own devices at work or do you find company is an essential criteria for you?
* Building and Banking are not coping well these days, so it's important to look very carefully at what sector would give you the most options?
* When you've done all your re-training, would you like this skill to serve you till you retire?
* Would you like your study to be in an industry where you believe you will be able to work until retirement?
Pay attention to the IT industry, that's our best advice - it's one of the few growing market sectors in the UK and Europe. And the salaries are much higher than most.
Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, undoubtedly, taking over from the more academic tracks into IT - so why is this happening? Industry now acknowledges that to cover the necessary commercial skill-sets, proper accreditation supplied for example by Microsoft, CompTIA, CISCO and Adobe often is more effective in the commercial field - for much less time and money. In essence, only that which is required is learned. It's slightly more broad than that, but the most important function is always to focus on the exact skills required (alongside some required background) - without attempting to cover a bit about everything else (as universities often do).
It's rather like the advert: 'It does what it says on the tin'. All an employer has to do is know what areas need to be serviced, and then advertise for someone with the specific certification. They'll know then that all applicants can do what they need.
When did you last consider the security of your job? Typically, this isn't an issue until we experience a knock-back. But really, The cold truth is that true job security doesn't really exist anymore, for all but the most lucky of us. We could however locate security at the market sector level, by digging for high demand areas, together with work-skill shortages.
The 2006 UK e-Skills study demonstrated that 26 percent of IT jobs haven't been filled because of an appallingly low number of appropriately certified professionals. To explain it in a different way, this shows that Great Britain only has 3 trained people for each four job positions in existence currently. Well qualified and commercially grounded new professionals are accordingly at a complete premium, and it seems it will continue to be so for a long time. Unquestionably, this really is such a perfect time to consider retraining into the computer industry.
You have to be sure that all your qualifications are commercially valid and current - don't even consider courses that only give in-house certificates. Only fully recognised examinations from the major players like Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco and Adobe will have any meaning to employers.
Huge changes are about to hit technology over the next few decades - and this means greater innovations all the time. Technology, computers and connections on the internet will spectacularly shape our lives over future years; to a vast degree.
And it's worth remembering that typical remuneration in the world of IT in Great Britain is noticeably higher than average salaries nationally, which means you'll probably receive significantly more with professional IT knowledge, than you would in most typical jobs. There is a significant nationwide demand for qualified IT professionals. It follows that as growth in the industry shows little sign of contracting, it looks like this pattern will continue for a good while yet.
