Vision correction simply means correction of your eyesight. To correct your eyesight, a doctor may suggest laser eye surgery. There are many types of laser eye surgery for correcting sight, such as Lasik, Lasek, PRK, and lens transplant. Other methods are available for vision correction as well. The ophthalmologist will evaluate your case and choose the best vision correction method for you. Your doctor will first consider your age, the level of moisture in your eye, your eye vision, cornea and shape of eye, thickness, shape of cornea and pupil dilation in low and bright light and then decide on a treatment. Lasik or laser in-keratomileusis surgery is a most common type of vision correction surgery. This surgery takes roughly 20 seconds and is painless. Anesthetizing eye drops are applied to the eye before the Excimer laser is used. Eye surgeons generally suggest medication to treat any scratchy or painful sensation. You will be free from glasses and traditional contact lens. Pregnant women and kids under 18 are not recommended for this surgery, and patients must follow a therapeutic regimen after the surgery. For example, you must wear an eye shield while sleeping and protect your eye from any kind of pressure. You should not play sports and avoid swimming.
Lasek eye surgery is performed on those patients that are not suited for Lasik surgery. Doctors apply an alcohol solution to loosen the outer layer of cornea of your eye and afterwards an excimer laser is used. After the surgery the outer layer of cornea is replaced to protect the eye and for fast healing a bandage contact lens is worn.
PRK surgery or photo refractive keratectomy surgery is also a type of laser surgery in which the outer corneal layer is scraped manually and then an Excimer laser reshapes your cornea. The outer layer of cornea grows back on its own. This is suitable for those people who have a cornea that may be too thin for other techniques. PRK is also called Epi-laser surgery as a plastic blade is used to scrape back the outer layer of cornea.
For those people who do not want undergo laser surgery, non-laser vision correction methods are available. In one non-laser vision correction treatment, corneal rings (small perspex rings) are placed inside the cornea to reshape it. Another vision correction method is the ICL - Implantable Collamer Lens. In this treatment, a new permanent lens is implanted in the eye. ICL vision correction treatment results in sharp clear vision.
Another option for vision correction is popularly known as lens transplant surgery. This transplant surgery is an alternative to laser surgery. There are many people who find themselves uncomfortable with laser surgery techniques. In transplant surgery, your eye lens is transplanted with a lens suited according to the physical properties of your eyes.
