The Oh Vets Bonus is now available to vets who served more than 90 days active duty, not for training, during the periods of the Persian Gulf War in addition to the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Previously on August 24, 2010 http://vets1st.org reported that this bonus was on http://vets1st.org/ohio-veterans-can-apply-for-new-state-bonus . We have just learned that even though more than $2,300,000.00 has actually been disbursed to over 33,500 Ohio vets since then, there are an estimated 200,000 Oh Veterans that could possibly still be entitled to this important reward and now it is extremely important to get the word out!
The state's tradition of offering bonuses to Ohio vets dates to the Civil War. In Ohio Veterans of military service from any era generally qualify for a number of ongoing federal and state benefits ranging from compensation for injuries to health care, education, home loans and many others, to include direct financial assistance in cases of need. County veterans service offices in each of Ohio's counties will assist veterans in applying for these benefits.
For the program related to veterans of the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan , the funding for this bonus program comes from a $200 million bond issue approved by the voters in Ohio in November 2009 and is administered through the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.
"This is real money for veterans, for whatever purpose they need or desire," Moe said. "We know that the bonus has already made a difference in the lives of over 33,500 Ohioans."
The program is for veterans of the Persian Gulf, that served from Aug. 2, 1990, through Mar 3, 1991; and for Afghanistan veterans who served anytime starting Oct. 7, 2001 . For Iraq vets who served begining Mar 19, 2003. Note there currently is no "through" date for Iraq and Afghanistan deployments, hence even those currently deployed should probably be entitled.
Money might be obtained for active duty service anywhere in the world throughout these time periods, however will be higher for vets who served inside the Persian Gulf or in Afghanistan or Iraq. Entitled vets had to have been Oh residents at the time of their admittance into the service, as well as must be Oh residents now.
The bonus will pay you $100 each month to veterans who served in the Persian Gulf theater, or in the countries of Afghanistan or Iraq, up to a maximum of $1,000. For veterans who served in other regions, the compensation is generally $50 per month up to a $500 maximum. Vets medically discharged due to combat service could be awarded $1,000, regardless of how long they spent in combat, and also as much as $500 for months of service somewhere else. Members of the family of those killed in action or who passed away caused by disease as a result of their in-theater service can be given a bonus of $5,000 as well as whatever the service member was qualified for, up to a total of $6,500.
Bottom line: If you are an Ohio veteran and in addition served during these wars, please accept the benefit; you have earned it. Besides, the voters of Ohio have a prolonged history connected with pride of their vets. They voted for this brand-new program and also backed it as being a way of expressing "thank you for your service".
There could possibly be similar plans available for vets of most other states. |

I'm a retired veteran from World war 2. It is said about veterans the fact that "all gave some, some gave all" so we owe it to all veterans as well as active service women and men to provide them as much as we can.
