You'll notice advantages to local direct mail small business advertising. I mean marketing and advertising with local direct mail providers that mail out directories, envelopes filled of coupons, or inexpensive postcards.

Junk mail is nearly always checked out even if it is then thrown away. Mass mailed postcards are practically always perused before they are thrown away or used later.

Radio advertising might be worthwhile, but the listener must be listening to this exact station at the exact time your advertisement plays, or the effort is of no use. The same with TV. Newspaper marketing and advertising could work, but in reality the reader must find your ad in the newspaper, if the customers open the paper at all. However nobody goes out to the mailbox, takes their stack of mail, and disposes of it without looking at each piece of mail.

Purchasing "Featured Listings" with online directories is one such waste of money.
