If I met you at a social event and after being introduced made the statement that, "I'm a Life Coach and my life is perfect" I'm sure you would at best be a bit leery of me and at worst think I was a smug jerk.
The reality of the situation is I am indeed a Life Coach, but like the other seven billion people I share the planet with, my life is not perfect. In fact it's not even close to being perfect, nobodies is.
I sometimes get irritable, especially when I get wrapped up in red tape or the dogs start acting up. I also can allow myself to get stressed from time to time especially in the lead up to public speaking gigs or when I get behind on writing projects. I also sometimes show a lack of patience, particularly behind the wheel of a car in heavy traffic.
For me to pretend otherwise would not only be a lie, but also hypocritical and be doing a disservice to not just myself, but the profession of Life Coaching in general.
And that is the reason I don't understand the logic of Life Coaches that only seem to want to put their best foot forward and pretend that everything in their garden is rosy. Even the most beautiful of gardens have the occasional weed emerge, that's simply the way of the world.
I'm sure gardeners the world over don't get panicky when they see a weed and think people will think they are incompetent. They simply deal with the problem.
I'm going to let you into a secret about Life Coaching and the self-development industry in general. I have never attended any training in which as least half the people there were so because they wanted to work on themselves.
And when I say half, I am being generous because it's usually more than three quarters. I only got into Life Coaching via stress management because I wanted to work on my own stress levels.
Once I had done my basic training I did indeed do additional training to help me become a better Life Coach. But even so, I was constantly picking up tips and tricks to help make me a better person as well as a better coach.
Seven years down the road and I still work on myself every single day in some way shape or form such as meditation, reading, working out etc, because this type of work lasts a lifetime and is never done. We can always grow and improve if the will is there to do so.
So if you happen to find yourself on a Life Coaching website that suggests the person behind the site is living an ideal life ask yourself if that is really possible or whether it's just a mask.
I'm a Life Coach and my life isn't perfect and I can't help you find a perfect life either. Mine's pretty good though and I'm happy with pretty good, at least for now.
