Todays ear piercing has evolved into a whole new genre of piercings over the past twenty years or so. We have gone from having our ears pierced two or three times, to having various body parts pierced with anything from regular studs to barbells! And for those of us who are willing to go to the extra extreme, having a pierced ear, stretched. Ear piercing, body piercing, it is all body modification, some to the extreme, and it has been around from all different cultures for centuries. No one knows when the first piercing practice began, but we do know it has been around for thousands of years.
Ear and body piercing is one of the oldest forms of adornment or modification, along with tattooing. There are both religious and cultural reasons for a person to pierce his or her ears or body. But in todays world, you dont really need a reason, just the desire to be different, or for ornamental or sexual reasons. Some people consider the piercing of the ear or other body parts to be signs of rebellion, while others consider the act fashionable and trendy. It seems that today, everyone has a piercing somewhere or other. From pop and rock stars to movie stars, something is pierced. The most popular piercings seem to be ear, nose, and lip.
Did you know that there are ten places on your ear alone that can be pierced? Amazing! An increasingly popular piercing is the lip. You have the labret, vertical labret, lowbret, and vertical lowbret, and the common upper lip piercings called the madonna and the medusa. There are so many, many places on the human body to get a piercing, but i think the most unusal that i have heard of would be the uvula. You know, the thingy at the back of your throat that hangs down?
Yeah, people have actually had their uvula pierced. What I want to know is, how did the piercer grab hold of it long enough to actually pierce it? Crazy!
There are a variety of piercings available these days, not just the piercings themselves, but there is also a wide variety of what, exactly you can put in your piercing. Personally, I will stick to just having my ears pierced, well maybe my nose. Ha! Just kidding. But really, there are many options out there for someone who is interested in getting a piercing. Take you time and do your research.
