To put it simply, pollution is contamination. It is contamination of our air, our water, and our land. Where does the contamination come from? It comes from us, from our man made waste products. All of the earth's problems today can be traced back to pollution. Air Pollution has lead to the "hole" in the ozone layer, global warming, and especially the greenhouse effect, which are all a factor in todays climate change. For example, tsunamis that wipe out entire populations, category 5 hurricanes reaching land, and record snowfalls burying towns under feet of snow.
The earth's surface is more than 70% covered by water. Water is our most important resource, for without water there can be no life. Our drinking water, lakes, rivers, ponds, and oceans and seas are all affected by water pollution. Its a chain effect. The water gets contaminated, we drink it we get sick. We eat living organisms that live in polluted water, we get sick. We may not get sick immediately, but it is harmful after long term exposure to the contaminants. Where does the pollution come from? It comes from sewage, wastewater, industrial waste, underground storage containers that spring leaks, these are just a few examples.
Another type of pollution is land pollution. There are many contributing sources to land pollution. Industrial factories, nuclear plants and oil refineries are some obvious examples. How about littering, deforestation, and construction debris? There are many more sources of land pollution. Did you know that we throw enough trash away everyday to fill over 60,000 garbage trucks? Wow! Everyday! I had no idea. The best way to help prevent land pollution is to recycle. Hey, did you know that there are biodegradable packaging peanuts? All you have to do is put them in your sink and run water over them and they disintegrate into nothing and wash right down your drain.
How about noise pollution? I never though of noise as pollution before. Noise pollution could be described as energy waves instead of particles, like in air pollution. Loud, repeating noises, train and plane noise can be considered as noise pollution, as well as automobile and entertainment noise, example, loud sterios. Hearing lose is the main effect of noise pollution, and you may not even realize that you are having a lose in hearing, as it occurs gradually, over years. Of course, all hearing lose is permanent, so think about keeping the decibels down.
