Some enthusiasts think to fish in salt water provides the ultimate in sportfishing experience, while others are very enthusiastic about the fresh water encounter. Whilst the 2 activities differ in lots of ways, there are parallels, in particular where game fishing is involved.
Fishing salt waters certainly mostly occurs in the ocean, be it from the the shoreline or the deep sea. Addititionally there is some salt water fishing to be enjoyed in river estuaries, where in some cases like the Breede River, salt water may be encountered for up to 10 kilometres or more up stream in the river. Cob, particularly, can be fished up stream in the Breede River. The real fun in salt water fishing, though possibly lies in ocean fishing. Such pastime though requests major investment in gear and a boat if you are a real lover. Visiting places like Sodwana Bay, you will soon enough find out the genuine level to which some fishermen spend money on their hobby. Beginning with 4x4 vehicles, the investment further stretches to outdoor camping gear, a boat and of course the fishing tackle, which in itself involves a good few notes of the blue kind. For those with less savings there are many options where a boat may be hired, but such sites tend to be more 'civilised' in that they are more established on the developed coastal areas unless you are ready to travel to Mozambique. Deep sea fishing afford those that prefer salt water fishing the opportunity of indulging in the exotic in that marlin, shark and some tuna species can offer a great test on your angling ability.
Fresh water angling, aside from the common river or dam fishing for carp and yellow fish, can nonetheless be every bit as stimulating as it primarily requires visiting some exciting locations like the Cahorra Bassa dam in Mozambique where large Tiger fish and monster Vudu could be had. Tiger fish of up to twelve Kg's contribute towards major fun and skill to land, and are mostly trawled for from a fishing boat. The talent in landing a Tiger fish lies in the fact that its pallet is very tough and you need to strike with some power to properly bed the hook of the spoon to its pallet, or else the fish shakes it loose as it tail walks the waters wiggling its head to dislodge the hook. Many a fish is lost like this. A Tiger fish further pretty much fights to its death as much Tigers after a considerable fight land in the boat dead from pure fatigue. Catching a Vudu of 40 Kg's is also some experience, as this species also provide a great fight before finally succumbing. Reaching these fishing spots for fresh water game fish demands some travelling, but often accommodation and fishing facilities are available by lodge operators specialising in freshwater game fishing opportunities. Fairly often fishing tackle may be hired and boating facilities are supplied by these operators. Fishing opportunities abound in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, but Tiger fishing can also be had in the Pongola area of Kwa Zulu Natal, although not of the size they grow further up north.
Of course salt water fishing is exhilarating but don't deny yourself a life experience of hooking a real massive Tiger fish with pearly whites much like your mother in law's Doberman.
