Wii Workouts: Is Gaming Exercise Productive?

Stepping aside from the conventional approach to workouts, I'd like to appear at the newest evolution: video game exercise. The so-called Wii workout games are ever growing in numbers. It's incredible how far things have come. A hobby that was within the past associated with lazy couch potatoes and one that was decried as partially responsible for America's childhood obesity epidemic now may perhaps provide a remedy to the challenges it was once accused of causing. The key question is whether or not video game exercise can really be successful for weight reduction.

I was an early adopter of the Wii and it is made for numerous fun times. On the other hand, "exergames" have been out there for longer than the Wii's existence. Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) can be a classic that has been around for a decade and needs you to move your feet to musical and visual cues. I've always enjoyed DDR and can commonly work up a fairly excellent sweat at greater levels of difficulty.

Regardless of all of the recent Wii games dealing with fitness, the only game I've any experience with is Wii Fit. It's certainly fun and can deliver a decent workout. It's certainly not as intense as any routine I perform as part of my training, but I believe it is excellent for beginners. It absolutely beats just sitting on the couch as well. Is it as effective as a high intensity workout? I do not think so.

Several studies have been performed on the impact of "exergaming" and discovered a substantial benefit for young children. A study by the University of Nebraska analyzed Wii Boxing, Wii Tennis, and DDR. A further study from the Netherlands looked at DDR and Wii Tennis also. Both studies discovered that the games required more than twice as much energy as standard games and that they raised children's activity levels enough to meet health guidelines for a moderate-intensity activity.

Not too long ago, I saw an interesting write-up in the Boston Globe. It questioned regardless of whether Wii games like Wii Fit, EA Sports Trainer, Jillian Michaels, The Biggest Loser, and Your Shape could truly assist you to get fit. They didn't test standard old couch potatoes. They tested actual athletes and trainers. The bottom line is that several of the above mentioned games are very good workouts for beginners but a lot more skilled lifters would tire of them promptly. They offer a nice option to traditional cardio performed on a treadmill or elliptical though.

I personally feel there is an excellent psychological benefit to performing a video game workout. Some people should be properly motivated. Although I exercise alone, several persons like having a personal trainer to motivate them. Games are in essence virtual trainers. In addition, games can bring out competitive spirit so that you're trying to continually get a higher score. As a result you increase your fitness level at the same time.

Though video games supposedly deliver low intensity alternatives to classic exercise routines, you can find some risks involved (aside from throwing the remote through the Television). The biggest risk is actually a minor repetitive strain. Performing the exact same movements or playing too challenging for too long can result in this kind of injury. This is extra prevalent with the games like Wii Sports that involve motion but that weren't directly designed for physical exercise. In case you are playing specific fitness games, several of them basically have the same risks as participating in any typical fitness center class that utilizes bodyweight training.

I think the bottom line on video game exercise is that it is far more successful than doing absolutely nothing. I'm old school in that I think playing a game of basketball or any other sport outside is much better than playing a video game. That becoming said, Wii workout games is usually effective if they motivate you to move around more than you do on a typical basis. Just be careful to keep away from too lots of repetitive motions. If absolutely nothing else, at least video games can help make physical exercise fun.
