AMG is the high performance division of Mercedes Benz, the AMG arm has been very subtle with its cars up until now, but the SLS AMG changed that! The AMG arm is seen as a very specialist department that does not mass produce cars and did not have its own models or identity.
With the SLS Mercedes Benz took a chance and launched it as an AMG branded car, it has received phenomenally good reviews and sales are going well. The financial benefits of the SLS have helped AMG and Mercedes Benz come to the conclusion that maybe there is a market for AMG as a standalone brand.
Today the German car maker announced that it is not ruling out a range of AMG model as long as it all made financial sense. AMG boss Ola Kallenius said, “AMG is a financial company and runs with targets, just like every other company. These products can™t just be built for fun. We need a reasonable return to fund new projects.”
The first of a range of new AMG models is predicted to be a Porsche Carrera rival; it will cost £80,000 and will be the entry level model. Power is likely to come from an all-new 500bhp twin-turbocharged 5.4-litre V8, which will sit in the front-mid position and drive the rear wheels. A similar engine can be found in the Mercedes C Class in Hampshire if specified as the AMG model.
Unlike Mercedes Benz™s and AMG™s great rivals BMW and M Power, Mercedes has said it will not be developing high performance diesel engines. Mercedes Benz and AMG are totally against the compromises created by a diesel engine. AMG boss Ola Kallenius said, “The technology of performance gasoline engines is converging with diesel tech. Direct injection, downsizing and turbocharging are all having an effect.”
Looks like BMW will be sole suppliers of high performance diesel cars, this can either work very well for them or go horribly wrong, only time will tell.
