Galicia is famous for being one of the first kingdoms established in Europe. It is a popular place among the tourists. Its beach is known for many inlets similar to the fjords of Norway. With its mild temperature, the town attracts many tourists during summer.

Places of interest in Galicia:

Located in the northwest corner of Spain, this town with 3 million inhabitants is known for its long green pasture land, long beach which has retained its natural unspoiled beauty, and a wide variety of seafood unknown in other places in Europe. Although tourism is yet to pick up here, the place is known among bird watchers, those who love water sports, and those who want to spend their holiday away from the crowd and in the midst of quiet nature.

Lighthouse: Just a few minutes’ drive from Galicia is a centuries-old lighthouse. It is located in a place called La Coruna. In fact this lighthouse is still working and will be around for a long time to come. Just a little farther away is the Tower of Hercules. History says that it was from here that the Spanish Armada set sail in 1588 and was effectively repulsed by the British Navy commanded by Sir Francis Duke.

Beach: The unblemished coastline extends over 200 kilometers not at all overcrowded, with fjords which are covered and which provide for safe bathing. The entire coastline has many fishing villages. Along the coast are the restaurants which prepare mouth-watering seafood delicacies. One of the most popular dishes is the Goose Barnacle. It is said that the famous Hollywood actor cum director Woody Allen once remarked ‘How can this be so delicious?’

Santiago de Compostela: History of this city dates back to the 9th Century. The city shot to fame after the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Saint James. It is now a pilgrimage center too. The Santiago de Compostela Cathedral was built in honor of the Apostle. This most beautiful cathedral with its religious significance and containing holy relics which are believed to be centuries old is certainly a place every tourist should visit.

Lugo: The beauty and the importance of this stunning city need not be emphasized again because it has been declared as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. Dating back to the Roman period, the city withstood the onslaughts of the Vikings and the Moors who are believed to have even set fire to the city. Many of the historic buildings have been saved and retain their old glory.

There are many other very important places like Vigo, La Coruna, etc. which are worth seeing.
