Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes the skin to become itchy, reddened, dry and cracked.

Atopic eczema is the most ordinary form of eczema, and mainly affect children.

The exact cause of atopic eczema is unidentified, but it often occurs in people who are prone to allergy ('atopic' means sensitivity to allergens).

The meaning of the word “eczema” can cause confusion. Many people use this word to refer to a common skin form called atopic dermatitis. When this is the meaning, the words “eczema/atopic dermatitis” may be used.

The word “eczema” also has a more general meaning. Eczema can mean a family of skin conditions that causes the skin to become distended, irritated, and itchy.

Causes of Eczema

People with eczema may have a unique set of causes, or triggers, that produce a skin rash. Some of the more common causes of eczema flare-ups include:

1. Changes in temperature or humidity

2. Chemical irritants, such as pesticides, paint strippers, alcohol, astringents, perfumes, harsh soaps, detergents, and household cleaners

3. Physical irritants, such as clothes made of rough or scratchy fabrics, like wool

4. Allergies (to dust, pollen, mold, animal dander, etc.)

5. Intense emotion or stress

6. Infections of any kind

Symptoms of Eczema

It is estimated that at any one time around 25% of the population has a skin problem that could benefit from medical care; skin conditions account for between 15 and 20% of a GP’s workload.

One cause of itchy skin is eczema, a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions; there are more than 10 different

1. Itchy skin
2. Inflamed skin
3. Skin redness
4. Skin swelling
5. Skin cracking
6. Weeping
7. Crusting
8. Scaling

Treatment of Eczema

Before prescribing a treatment plan, a dermatologist considers the type of eczema, extent and severity of the eczema, patient’s medical history, and a number of other factors. Medication and other therapies will be prescribed as needed to:

1. Control itching
2. Reduce skin inflammation
3. Clear infection
4. Loosen and remove scaly lesions
5. Reduce new lesions

It is important to realize that in most cases no one treatment will be effective.

Medical research continue to show that the most effectual treatment plan for eczema — regardless of type — involve using a mixture of therapies to treat the skin and making lifestyle changes to control flare-ups.
